Cranberries are a quintessentially fall treat. After all, what Thanksgiving table is complete without a bowl of bright red cranberry salad? It’s the perfect complement to the other heavy foods. As you may already know, many cranberries are harvested in a unique way. The berries grow on bushes in sandy pits and then, when they are ready, the pits (or bogs as they are called) are pumped full of water. The berries have a buoyant nature and bob up to the top of the water when harvesting machines gently run over the tops of the waterlogged plants. People then go out into the bog and gather the berries using large ropes and a pump. Of course, this classic method is called wet harvesting…some berries are dry harvested instead, but it’s not as pretty as the striking view of a cranberry bog!

When we visited New England, I really wanted to try to see a cranberry harvest if possible, since they happen during late fall. We weren’t sure of the schedule, but it did work out and we got to see the harvesting process up close and personal! It was incredible. I loved the beautiful berries bobbing on the water and watching the workers climb through the bog in their wading jumpers.

We got to see the berries being gathered up, the machines treading the plants and the pump sucking the cranberries out of the water and into a large truck. This photo captures the sight of berries pouring into the truck, ready to take back for processing. May it remind you of Thanksgiving meals, family and all the blessings God has given you!

“Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NLT
