I’ll never forget the experience of hiking with crampons (spiked attachments you put onto boots for traction on ice) on an Alaskan glacier! I love new experiences and my family was gracious enough to oblige. We drove to the entrance and I embarked on my adventure. I’m not an athletic person and this glacier is more horizontal than vertical, so it was perfect!

Our small group got to do a little climbing and take as many pictures as we wanted while exploring. What surprised me the most was how much silt and mud was part of the glacial ice…it isn’t pure white. However, where the ice is super compressed, it has a blue tint to it that’s just gorgeous. According to this article, the extra-dense ice only reflects back blue wavelengths, so that’s why it looks beautiful blue!
